Building Confidence for AMC 2: Supporting International Medical Graduates Across Gippsland

Preparing for the Australian Medical Council (AMC) Clinical Examination is an important milestone for many International Medical Graduates (IMGs) working towards their medical careers in Australia. Having access to practical guidance, experienced mentors and opportunities to build confidence can make a real difference along the way.

Recognising the importance of this support, The Network – For Doctors, By Doctors recently sponsored a two-part AMC 2 Preparation and Guidance Masterclass for doctors across Gippsland.

Learning from Experience

The sessions were facilitated by Dr Shermila Jayasinghe, Consultant Physician, Medical Career and Mindset Coach, and founder of Life in Focus, a career coaching and mindset transformation practice.

Dr Jayasinghe is well known across Gippsland, having previously worked as a General Physician at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service. During her time there, she also delivered sessions to support International Medical Graduates preparing for their AMC 2 examinations.

Passionate about supporting doctors throughout their careers, Dr Jayasinghe brings extensive experience in helping clinicians build confidence, navigate career progression and perform at their best in high-pressure environments.

Her understanding of the challenges faced by doctors preparing for their examinations made her a valuable guide throughout the two sessions.

From Exam Preparation to Practical Experience

The two-part masterclass combined practical advice with opportunities for participants to apply their learning.

The first session focused on understanding the AMC 2 examination structure and developing effective preparation strategies. Participants explored study approaches, clinical reasoning and techniques to help them feel more prepared for the examination.

The second session took a more interactive approach, giving participants the opportunity to practise a mock examination station and receive real-time feedback from Dr Jayasinghe.

This hands-on experience allowed doctors to put their knowledge into practice, reflect on their performance and identify areas for further development, all within a supportive learning environment.

Supporting Doctors Across Gippsland

Doctors from health services across Gippsland joined the masterclasses, bringing together clinicians with a shared goal of progressing in their medical careers.

Participants valued the opportunity to learn directly from Dr Jayasinghe, ask questions and receive practical advice relevant to their examination preparation.

For International Medical Graduates, navigating the AMC examination process can be challenging. Sessions like these provide an opportunity to learn from experienced clinicians, practise clinical scenarios and gain confidence alongside colleagues working towards similar goals.

Investing in the Future of Our Medical Workforce

Supporting doctors throughout their training and professional development is at the heart of The Network – For Doctors, By Doctors.

Through initiatives such as the AMC 2 Preparation and Guidance Masterclass, The Network continues to create opportunities for education, mentorship and connection, helping doctors develop their skills while strengthening the medical community across Gippsland.

A big thank you to Dr Shermila Jayasinghe for generously sharing her time, knowledge and expertise, and to all the doctors who participated in the sessions.

We look forward to continuing to support medical students and doctors across Gippsland as they learn, connect and progress through their medical careers.
